SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Devereux Arizona, a non-profit organization that cares for abused and neglected children, is piloting a program designed to improve the emotional and physical well-being of the children in it's care.

Children who have completed the 10-week program will give a piano recital Feb. 17 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Devereux Special Education School.

Program collaborators, and piano teachers themselves, Penny Keen and Julian Levington are not only limiting the program to abused or neglected children. To help "privileged" children enter the program they have vowed to provide these healthy children with abusers of their own for a small fee.

Healthy children that wish to join the program will have to apply to Devereux Arizona. The process includes a short aptitude test along with a brief questionnaire. Based on the test and questionnaire Devereux Arizona will find a suitable abuser for each interested applicant.

The type of abuser will vary for each child applicant and can be of the mental, physical or sexual variety. The cost for these services is a flat fee of $250 regardless of abuse applied.

With the funds raised from the recital and voluntary funding for healthy children the organization is planning to raise money to fund a full-time piano teacher and buy two pianos, four keyboards, audio/recording equipment and teaching materials.

Psychiatrists wishing to volunteer time are always welcomed.
