Mormons taking look at doctrines on Blacks Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY, UT - Twenty years after the Mormon Church dropped its ban against Blacks in the priesthood, key leaders are debating a proposal to repudiate historic church doctrines that were used to bolster claims of Black inferiority. The proposal to disavow the teachings, which purport to link Black skin color to curses from God recounted in Hebrew and Mormon Scripture, is under review by the church's Committee on Public Affairs. "It appears, after careful consultation with our prophets," said Samuel Smith of the Mormon Church, "that Blacks, indeed, are not inferior." Said Enos Smith, no relation, a church scholar, "Their dark skin color is not a sign of being cursed by God and Blacks do not have monkey tails like some of the earlier scriptures may have been thought to have said." "Unless Blacks have been genetically altered" to remove their monkey tails "it would appear as though the scriptures were translated incorrectly," said Tammy Smith, again no relation. The religious studies college student added, "However, I wouldn't put it past them Blacks to do something like that. They're just as sneaky as them Orientals." "So, in short," said Christopher Smith, again no relation, speaking from the Committee on Public Affairs offices in downtown Salt Lake City, "we're going to remove the 'curse' from the Black community. However," he added, "this is a give and take and we are going to need something in return." Speaking as the direct voice of the modern day prophets Thomas Smith, again no relation, said at the press conference, "We want polygamy back." The silence was deafening. And then the silence turned to laughter as the throng of reporters realized Smith had to be joking. "No," said Smith. "I'm serious. Polygamy is well documented in the Bible and the Book of Mormon as being not only acceptable but healthy and proper under the Lord's eyes." When reached for comment black leaders had this to say. "Hell yeah!" said the revered Johnson Washington from his office in New York City. "We get the curse removed and we get to bag a boatload of broads as wives! Can this day get any better?" ©Copyright 2004, SHF News |
