Man walks for help with shark attached to leg
Luke Tresoglavic,
SYDNEY, Australia -
Lifeguards at a beach north of Sydney were stunned when a man walked into their post looking for help with a small shark attached to his leg.
Luke Tresoglavic swam 1,000 feet to shore, walked to his car and drove to the local surf club with the two-foot shark biting his leg and refusing to let go.
"I just realized I had to swim in like that, hanging on to it," Tresoglavic told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio on Wednesday.
Tresoglavic, 22, was snorkeling on a reef off Caves Beach near Newcastle on Tuesday when a wobbegong, or carpet shark, attacked his leg.
"Once I got on to shore, a couple of people tried to help me, but I could not remove it. It was stuck there, so I got up into my car and then drove to the clubhouse, and luckily the guys down there had a clue what to do," he said.
Lifeguard Michael Jones said he couldn't believe his eyes when Tresoglavic turned up - shark in tow.
"He basically asked the question: 'Can you help me get it off?' There's nothing in our procedure manual for that type of thing," Jones said.
The lifeguards flushed the shark's gills with fresh water, forcing it to loosen its grip on Tresoglavic's leg - with blood oozing from 70 needle-like punctures. The shark later died.
Tresoglavic was taken to hospital, but it was not immediately clear what treatment he received.
Wobbegong sharks can grow up to 10 feet in length, possess razor-sharp teeth, and are said to be moody and short-tempered.
Man, what a stud! Can't really say much about this guy except I'd hate to be a shark in the waters off Australia.

Defendant in Reginald Denny beating killed in L.A. shooting
Antoine Miller,
Los Angeles, CA -
One of four men prosecuted in the beating of truck driver Reginald Denny during the 1992 Los Angeles riots was killed in a nightclub shooting, police said Wednesday.
Antoine Miller died Sunday after being shot Feb. 1 in Hollywood, said Officer Lucy Diaz. He was 31.
One other man was wounded. The shooting remained under investigation.
Denny's beating came at the start of the riots sparked by the acquittal of white police officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King.
Helicopter footage showed several black men pulling Denny, who is white, from the cab of his truck, kicking and beating him, then smashing his skull with bricks and a fire extinguisher.
Despite being beaten nearly to death, Denny showed little anger toward the men prosecuted in his attack, even as they were acquitted of the most serious charges.
Miller, Henry Keith Watson and Lance Jerome Parker received probation. Damian "Football" Williams served about four years in prison for mayhem and misdemeanor assault.
Anyone suprised that this shitbag is dead? Good riddance... too bad someone couldn't have killed him while he was beating Reginald Denny.

Maybe a little family planning?
Donna Rigby,
Prescott, AZ -
Regarding The Republic's series "Failing Health: A special report":
After reading the article about Aaron and Stacee Porter's struggle with affordable health care ("Bills pull family into spiral of debt," Sunday), I was so upset, I had to sit down, take a deep breath and fume for a few minutes.
Here we have a family with an income of $80,000 a year, unable to afford health insurance, unable to pay debts, expecting doctors and hospitals to reduce fees, moving in with parents and utilizing Medicaid.
The funny/pathetic part of the whole story is that even though this family was unable to afford health insurance or pay their bills, they kept having children! There are six children in the photo of what appears to be a rather nice two-story house.
Although I agree there is a real crisis with affordable health insurance in this country, I do not agree with the thinking of people who feel it's their right to have large families and then expect others to help them out.
Can't afford insurance on an $80,000-a-year income? Solution: Keep expanding your family! Good grief!
I Love It! I love it when a liberal newspaper like the Republic tries to make it's readers feel sorry for a family by saying how rough they have it; can't even afford health insurance in $80k a year. Then someone sees through the bullshit and points out the obvious: It's their own damn fault! Morons! It seems pretty simple to me but if you can't afford to support a large family then you ought not to be making a large family. Maybe they are Mexican... or Mormon... at least then they'd have a reason for a large family: They can't help it, it's in their genes, that's all they know how to do.
