This is a letter I wrote to The Arizona Republic, I write at least once a month and have been published a half a dozen time, about File Sharing vs. Firearms Violence.

File Sharing vs. Firearms Violence

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said on Thursday that "peer-to-peer software developers were not liable for any copyright infringement committed by people using their products, as long as they had no direct ability to stop the acts." (John Borland, CNET News.com, August 19, 2004)

Could we apply that same argument to the firearms industry and attempts to sue gun manufacturers over a criminal's misuse of a perfectly safe instrument? Let's see:

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said on Thursday that "[FIREARMS MANUFACTURERS] were not liable for any [CRIMES] committed by people using their products, as long as they had no direct ability to stop the acts."

Sounds to me like a precedent-setting decision.
